Pool table games are not very popular in Assam though it is very popular among certain sections of youth. However, due to lack of enough places where this game can be played, its popularity didn’t soar. However, Star Sporting Club, one of the oldest and renowned sporting club from Guwahati has taken an effort to popularise the game by organizing the 2nd All Assam 8 Ball and 9 Ball Open Pool Championship. The tournament is affiliated by All Assam Snooker and Billiards Association. The tournament is being organized at Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan Indoor Stadium in R G Baruah Sports Complex.
Speaking to Eclectic Northeast, Abhijit Das, one of the organizers said, ‘Pool table craze had started here since the year 2000. Youngsters love playing pool but there are not enough places here where you can play. There are some bars like Underdog where it is too costly. We had a place called Pool Zone in Ulubari but unfortunately that was also shut down. So, we are basically organizing this tournament for people who love playing this game.’
Das informs that there will be 60 participants in the tournament, with 30 in the 8 Ball and 9 Ball sections each. Two participants are from Silchar and the rest are from Guwahati. ‘The players here are all amateurs though some have played at the competitive level. This time, we couldn’t do the seeding of players. For that, we need an affiliation from the National Snooker and Billiards Championship. Hopefully we can get that by next year.’
It may be mentioned that Star Sporting Club is one of the oldest sporting clubs in Guwahati. It was started in 1954 by late Abdul Rahman. The club is affiliated to Guwahati Sports Association. Over the years, it has produced star sportsmen like Abdul Latif (footballer), Gautam Dutta and Nasir Gul Khan (cricketers).
