Average life expectancy rate in Assam is 63.9 years, which is one of the worst in the country. This disturbing fact has come out in World Bank’s Sample Registration System’s (SRS) latest report. As per the report, the average life expectancy of male in Assam is 62.7 years and that of female is 65.5 years. The average life expectancy of India is 67.9 years. Kerala has the highest expectancy in the country with 74.9 years followed by Delhi (73.2 years) and Jammu & Kashmir (72.6 years). States like Uttar Pradesh (64.1) and Madhya Pradesh also have better life expectancy than Assam.
In fact, the report says that the scenario in Assam can be compared with the war ravaged African countries like Sudan, Tanzania, Haiti, Kenya, Ghana and Zambia. Interestingly, life expectancy of people living in urban areas (70.3 years) is much higher than those living in rural areas (63 years). This can be attributed to the better healthcare facilities available in the urban areas.
