Ever since it was announced that some of the upcoming colleges will be named after Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, State Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been subjected to a lot of criticisms. Noted journalist Atanu Bhuyan, known to be close to Sarma once has recently joined the bandwagon of bashing Sarma over naming colleges after BJP ideologue Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya.
Bhuyan, in a facebook post said, ‘ Many people might think that the Central government might have instructed Assam Government to name colleges after Deen Dayal. But it is not true. The decision to name these colleges after Deen Dayal is entirely Himanta’s. When people asked Himanta about Deen Dayal, he told them to search about him in Google. My question is why should people search about him in Google. If the man is such a famous intellectual, there should have been hundreds of books written about him. But how many people have actually written about him. Even if we accept that the Congress government had hidden the history of Deen Dayal from people, why intellectuals from BJP didn’t write books on him.’
Also commenting on Himanta’s spat with renowned intellectual and social thinker from Assam, Dr Hiren Gohain, Atanu Bhuyan said, ‘ Many might not know that Dr Hiren Gohain was the reason Himanta was expelled from AASU. Gohain was asked to play the mediator by AASU. When he met the then Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia, the latter informed Gohain that Himanta Biswa Sarma from AASU has already reached out to me. When Gohain informed this to AASU leadership, they expelled Sarma from the party who subsequently joined Congress. However, Sarma has held a grudge against Gohain since then.’
Bhuyan, on the other has quit the channel Assam Talks where he was working as the Editor-in-Chief.
