It was the perfect plan. A group of robbers managed to get inside a bank in midnight. The bank had no security guard and the activity was not noticed by the patrolling team as well. There was a hefty amount lying in the locker of the desolate bank and all they had to do was to break the locker and flee with the money. However, the plan got foiled big time due to one reason- the robbers couldn’t break the iron locker.
The incident took place at Axis Bank, Bongaigaon which was nearly 50 meters away from the region’s Deputy Commissioner’s office.
Though, the robbers failed to loot away any money from the bank as they were unable to break the locker containing the money; they managed to damage the CCTV camera control unit of the bank during the heist by the robbers.
Speaking exclusively to Eclectic Northeast about the incident, Dulal Kalita, OC of Bongaigaon PS said, ‘ These were a bunch of amateur dacoits as they didn’t have proper equipments to open the locker. One of the robbers has been captured on CCTV but he was wearing a mask. Till now, none of the bank employees have been able to identify him from the CCTV footage. We are not ruling out the possibility of the robbers getting help from inside as they came to loot the bank on the day when they were a huge amount lying in the bank. We are now trying to find out how many robbers were there in the group.’
