Two animal activists named Nandini Baruva and Kongka Passah carried a massive operation to rescue a total of 26 dogs which were abducted to be smuggled to Mizoram, allegedly. It all started after Kasturi Das, an animal lover tagged Nandini in a Facebook post which had the picture of few dogs onboard a vehicle on the Jowai highway. Without wasting even a single minute, Nandini reached out to her partner in the operation, Kongka. The two then rescued all the terrified dogs at Khliehriat, Jaintia Hills with the help of the police.
SI Kiran Lyngdoh from Khliehriat was in charge of this operation. On the first interrogation they could not find anything. ‘I re-shared the pictures of the dogs and the car and number plate and told her she will get them, and that they have hidden them and were lying.’ Thus, she made a second trip back and this time she succeeded, 4 women and a driver was arrested and 26 dogs were rescued. ‘We were constantly connected on phone, and for Kongka and me this was almost unimaginable.’ 7 dogs have been adopted by Kongka and 19 have been sent to Guwahati JBF for medical treatment.
Team PURRPAWS assisted the entire operation. ‘Some of the dogs were double tied with wires digging into their legs. They were traumatized, dehydrated and quite disoriented. PURRPAWS team Avinash, Siddharth Vasandani, Pankaj Narayan Choudhury helped in getting the dogs out of the van and sacks. The doctors at JBF made sure they get oral hydration and drips as required. They are safe now.’
