Most kids do not have a clear vision about who they want to be when they grow up. There are exceptions like Jarem. A young and talented designer from Northeast India, she always knew in her heart that fashion designing was her calling. She dreamt that she would grow up to be a successful designer and so she did. She even started her own label a few months back.
Soon, after completing her high school, she enrolled at NIFT. She studied there for about a year before moving to London. There she completed her BA (Honours) in Fashion Design from the London College of Fashion, University of Creative Arts.
She launched the fashion label ‘Jarem’ in April this year at the Holiday Trunk Show curated by celebrity stylist Tanya Ghavri. ‘I had taken part in the exhibition to showcase my Spring/Summer 2017 collection.’ The collection features lovely summer outfits that are trendy and sophisticated. It was inspired by Walt Whitman’s collected poems Leaves of Grass.
Of course, it has not been a cake-walk to get the label off the ground. There were a lot of challenges that she had to overcome. ‘The most difficult part was time management because no matter how much you plan and prepare, things just don’t work out the way you imagine most of the time and you have to adapt and adjust, even till the last minute. I realized that it is never a smooth road, so you just have to go with the flow.’
Jarem’s latest collection features georgettes, crepe, cotton, and schiffli. Jarem shares that she loves to work with cotton, ‘I usually prefer fabrics that are comfortable to wear and breathable like cotton, but I also really like the fall and softness of silk chiffon.’ As for inspiration, she says that everything around her gives her ideas for new designs. ‘Sometimes the most inconsequential things in my every day life, like a nostalgic moment, or even a scent transforms into inspiring thoughts. I am also very inspired by artistes such as Rene Margritte and Egon Schile.’ She is also inspired by talented international designers like Christopher Kane, Marni, and Stella McCartney.
The Spring/Summer 2017 collection has a lot of dresses, tops, and pants, perfect for the hot and humid weather. The price range is between Rs 3000 to Rs 15,000. You can browse and buy Jarem outfits through their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/jaremlabel). One great news for shoppers is that they ship all over India.
In the coming months, Jarem will be participating in exhibitions namely The Pink Post It (New Delhi) and The Yellow Blossom (New Delhi). She also plans to start work on a new collection. ‘It will include some understated glamour and sparkle for the coming festive season.’
