Home-grown team Aizawl FC really came under the limelight when they won the Hero I-League season 2017-18. The team became the talk of the town for being the first team from the Northeast to become champions of the national league. Fans are hoping that they will continue their winning streak in the AFC Champions League as well.
The team will play Iranian club Zob Ahan in the play-off match of the AFC Champions League which will be held on January 30. If they win, they will be placed in Group B in the main round along with Al Duhail (Qatar), Al Wahda (UAE) and PFC Lokomotiv (Uzbekistan). If they manage to qualify, then Mohun Bagan will be able to compete in the AFC Cup.
However, If Aizawl FC is unable to progress to the main round of AFC Champions League, then they will get a direct entry in the AFC Cup in Group E.
About Aizawl FC
- Aizawl FC was founded in 1984 in Aizawl
- In January 2012, they were officially certified by AIFF to participate in the I-League 2nd Division
- In 2015, they won 2015 I-League 2nd Division and as a result they were able to participate in 2015–16 I-League
- On 30 April 2017, Aizawl won the 2016–17 I-League and became the first team from Northeast India to win the league
