An 80-year-old man died in a rhinoceros attack in Assam’s Majuli Island – the biggest river island in the world. The incident took place at Bhakta Chapori area in the newly formed river island district. The deceased was identified as Baluram Das.
According to sources, the rhino strayed out of Kaziranga National Park and was taking shelter in Majuli for the past one week and created panic among the locals.
Villagers of Bhakat Chapori area said that as soon as the old man stepped out of his house this morning, the beast attacked him.
‘The rhinos took shelter at a sugarcane field. While the old man came out from his house for a morning walk, the rhino attacked him just in front of the house,’ a local said.
The villagers immediately admitted him in the government-run Pitambor Dev Goswami Civil hospital at Gormur, but the man succumbed to his injuries. ‘I feel the rhino swam the Brahmaputra and reached Majuli,’ a local villager said.
Meanwhile, the forest officials are trying to send the rhino back into Kaziranga.
