After winning gold in the 400m race in the Federation Cup recently held in Jakarta, Hima Das qualifies for the next Common Wealth Games in 2018. She outran double Asian Games Medalist MR Poorvamma in the race. She cleared the race in 51.97s, 0.03s better than the Athletics Federation of India’s CWG qualifying guidelines.
Hima was in Jakarta to compete for the 200m race and ended up bagging gold in the 400m category, which left the coaches with no other option but to send her to the next CWG in Australia. The athlete hails from Dhing in Nagaon district of Assam where her parents work as farmers. She is the youngest of five siblings of Jomali and Ronjit Das. She initially played football but later took to athletics.
Hima was sent to compete at the Junior National Championships in Coimbatore after her performances in various clubs in Assam. Her mentor said that with very less training Hima made it to the final of the 100m to Coimbatore. With less training and opportunities, Hima is now aiming for Gold in CWG which obviously is a tough job, she states.
