According to an order from Home Commissioner Abhishek Singh, vehicles number plates should only display the registration number as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988 and Central Motor Vehicle Act 1989. No vehicles in Nagaland will be allowed to display anything other the registration number; therefore names and designations will be removed. The government cautioned that violators of the order would have to face action under Section 177 of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988.
This is an attempt to remove VIP culture from Nagaland. However, vehicles of ministers and MLAs will still sport colour coded car stickers which will be issued to facilitate their movement.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Dimapur, Sushil Kumar Patel, has already removed his designation plate from his official vehicle and has requested others to follow suit.
This is not the first time that such notifications have been issued in the State however in the past, they were mostly overlooked. Only time will tell whether this order will stick this time around.
