A month long campaign is underway at Chalamthang village located in South Sikkim. The campaign is aimed at becoming the cleanest organic village in the State and the country. Local panchayats, SHG members, schools teachers and villagers were present for the campaign launch. The village has around 222 households with around 1,071 people.
Chalamthang has a lot of government homestays. But the problem with Chalamthang is that there is no specific USP which draws tourists and travellers from across the country and the globe. Locals are hoping that the tag of ‘cleanest organic village’ will help bring in more tourists which in turn will help the local economy. Meena Sharma, a retired teacher of Upper Chalamthang Junior High School, donated 20 bamboo baskets to the village during the drive.
Mrinalini Srivastava, Managing Director of Temi Tea Estate also informed that plans are underway to set up traditional heal centres and wellness spa so that tourists can unwind and relax when they visit Chalamthang for a holiday.
