It is a great feeling to walk inside an air conditioned restaurant and enjoy beautifully plated morsels of food but at the same time there is something deeply satisfying about visiting hole-the-wall restaurants that people don’t know about and sample the food being served up by food trucks and carts. Guwahati has amazing street food culture and you cannot walk too far without noticing a new one popping up in every corner of the city. We list some local favourites that never fail to bring a smile to our lips.
A mouthful of puchka
It is hard to find people who do not like this savoury and sometimes spicy street snack that is not going to benefit your health in any way but will definitely satisfy your soul with each bite. Of course there are many puchka wallas in the city, here are some who will never disappoint. Check out the small puchka stall located just outside Brindavan in Zoo Tiniali that is open for business every evening. You can check out the stall located outside the famous Madhukunj Sweet Shop in the old Jail road area of Fancy Bazaar for mouth-watering puchkas. This is one stall that is located near the entrance of Pragjyotish College that is quite good, no wonder the students throng the stall the entire day
Be it summer or winter, we simply cannot function without our weekly dose of momos. There is something so amazing about biting into a juicy momo while sipping on the salty broth. There are many good momo stalls in Guwahati but there are few that are more in demand than others. The Momo Hut in Beltola- Basistha Road, Wireless, serves big momos that will leave you wanting more. Another place where you can get your fill of momos is Only Pork which is located in Six Mile.
Crazy about noodles
If you love stuffing yourself with delicious noodles then you will never go hungry in Guwahati because they are a lot of street stalls that offer chowmein at extremely affordable rates. Try eating at John’s Kitchen, which is one of the most popular food spots in GS Road. But be prepared to wait because it is difficult to get a seat as it is almost always packed. Another place that you should try is Reboti Chat House near Naktala Pukhuri. It is a very old eatery that offers good food at affordable rates.
