Shishu Sarothi, an organisation working towards ensuring the rights of persons with disabilities across the Northeast India region for the past over 31 years came out with an awareness rally at Birubari, Guwahati with the support of the community on 25th May 2018. The attempt was to create an awareness of its work and the rights of persons with disabilities amongst the community at large.
The rally was organised in collaboration with the Regional Action for Inclusive Education North-East (RAISE-North East) project. RAISE North East, supported by 3 international agencies, CBM, JVS and LFW, is a project to complement the flagship program of Sarva Siskha Abhiyan (SSA). Shishu Sarothi is the Lead Advocacy partner for the RAISE-NE project.
The objective of the rally was to sensitize the community on the rights of persons with disabilities, send a message to decision makers to take action to provide children with disabilities the opportunity to participate actively in society, create awareness among local bodies that all children have the right to quality inclusive education, increase enrolment and retention of children with disabilities in mainstream schools, gain community and parents commitment to ensure inclusive education and participation, make the schools and other public places accessible and safe.
The rally was flagged off by the Circle Officer, Kamrup (M), Damodar Barman. Barman expressed the support of the District Administration for Shishu Sarothi. Members from the Assam Sahitya Sabha, (Birubari Sakha), Ramakrishna Mission Ashram and Birubari Unnayan Samiti participated in the rally. They extended their support in ensuring that persons with disabilities in and around the community are not deprived of their rights. Students from nearby SSA schools also took part in the rally in solidarity towards the cause of inclusive education.
