Four young Mishmi damsels of Tezu, namely Retlilu Bellai, Meeta Aama, Jonetsi Pul, Reshnai Bellai has been working as depot staff in Lohit Agency at Tezu since the last four months. The four women have created a history as they are the first from the State to work at a petrol depot.
Retlilu is pursuing her degree in a Government College and the other three are school drop-outs. The proprietor of the depot, Nuney Tayang, said that these courageous and hardworking women deserve appreciation from all quarters for showing the way to many others. Oil depots and restaurants managed by only women are a common practice in other Northeastern states since long.
With the population on the rise and crisis of employment in the State, this is a new trend in Arunachal Pradesh. It should be mentioned that the sex ratio of the Lohit district is 912 against the State’s average sex ratio of 866. The State with 13.84 lakh population stood at the 20th rank in India with 11% of country’s share and a male-female ratio of 938:1000 as per the 2011 Census.
