Aizawl FC was presented the prestigious Editor’s Award for Excellence by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore at a gala award function held on Wednesday at Roseate House in New Delhi. The club was bestowed with the award by the world’s leading sports magazine – Sports Illustrated.
Aizawl FC’s owner and President, Robert Romawia Royte, and his wife, Aizawl FC co-owner, Lalrampari Royte, received the award on Aizawl FC’s behalf.
Receiving the award Robert Romawia Royte said that football has achieved many new achievements; it has become a bridge that joins mainland India and Northeast India. In the presence of the Union Sports Minister, Robert Romawia Royte, requested the minister and other stakeholders of the industry to invest more in the Northeast to tap local talent.
Raoyte expressed that it was sad for the club to play the Asian Cup home match in a different city due to the unavailability of FIFA standard football ground in Aizawl. ‘To host and witness the Asian Cup in Aizawl was the dream of thousands and thousands of Mizo football fans,’ he further mentioned.
The sports award night saw the presence of hockey player Balbir Singh, badminton star Srikanth Kidambi, Leander Paes, Olympian Jitu Rai, Olympic silver medalist Sushil Kumar (wrestler) and several big shots of the Indian sporting fraternity.
