Weavers of Assam will now be able to market their products globally as Balipara Foundation has joined hands with China on a joint venture, which aims to promote the local weavers.
The Balipara Foundation is a reputed conservation group based in Assam. They are currently working with Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB) in China on projects like livelihood enhancement and a campaign, I Weave You Wear.
Eco-designer, Arita Kashyap also a member of Balipara Founadation is involved in the weavers’ campaign, I Weave You Wear that Balipara Foundation is supporting through the brand.
Another member of the Balipara Founadation, Saurav Malhotra, informed that through Balipara Foundation’s Rural Futures programme, the foundation is generating livelihoods for people of the State living near forests by increasing forest cover. He further informed that Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB) in China has a similar concept called Mountain Futures. The foundation is planning to work on a partnership in conservation using Chinese technology.
Assam has a rich heritage in weaving and is home to the famous muga silk. Use of technology in terms of designing and making the best quality yarn without flaws will help build a sustainable livelihood for weavers through the Rural Futures initiative.
Arita Kashyap also mentioned that the Foundation under the campaign shall work towards individual tags for each product, which will contain information about the weaver.
