Assam’s athletics star Hima Das wins gold in the 200m race at the 58th National Inter State Senior Athletics Championship held in Guwahati on Wednesday night. Her timing of 23.10 seconds helped her secure a spot in the upcoming Asian Games to be held in Indonesia.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal who was present at the opening ceremony of the championship expressed hope that Assam’s pride Hima would bring more glory to the nation with her success in future sports events. He also pinned same hope for other budding sportspersons of the State as well.
Hima Das is the brand ambassador of the championship. PT Usha who was at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, Sarusajai at a press meet held before the opening ceremony praised Hima Das.
Running at lane number 7, the 18-year-old left behind Dutee Chand (23.41) of Odisha by a big gap at the finish line to clock a personal best time. There was a slight drizzle just before the start of the race but that did not have any effect on Das.
She hails from Dhing of Assam’s Nagaon district, and represented India at the 21st Commonwealth Games in Goldcoast, Australia this year. Hima also made history by becoming the first Indian woman to be qualified for 400 meter race in the finals of CWG.
