Poet Yuimi Vashum recently released Love-Lust-And Loyalty published by PenThrill Publication House. It was officially launched at Dimapur on May 22, 2018. The poet also unveiled the book in Imphal, her hometown, at an informal launch and discussion on 4th June.
‘Love-Lust-And Loyalty is a book of poetry collection that talks about my journey from childhood to adulthood as a survivor of child sexual abuse, and about relationships. The poems tell stories of my healing, my anger and my forgiveness. The later part of the book talks about love, love and more love. These pieces are penned down from incidents of my life as well as of incidents to people close to me.’ The poet hopes that the book will change the way people perceive sexually abused victims. ‘I decided to put together the unfortunate events and my celebration of life to show readers that sexually abused victims doesn’t become any less human; we are just like everyone else – we love, we lust and we are entitled to live a carefree life like anyone else.’
Of course, it wasn’t always easy for her to tap into pained memories but she felt that she needed to see it through in order to help other sexually abused victims across the region, the nation and the globe. ‘In spite of how uncomfortable this conversation is, I looked back into the unpleasant events in my life and decided to take this as an opportunity for me to start the uncomfortable conversation. Because, there are kids out there who are waiting for this conversation to happen. There are broken souls out there who need to be told that none of it is our fault, and that what happened to us in the shadows shall not bound us for life.’
She also urged victims to take baby steps to stop the abuse. ‘If there is someone out there, who is going through what I have been through then I urge you to start saying “NO”. The two letter word is your baby steps to courage and self-love. If there is someone who is harming you, doing things to your body that you don’t want, know that none of it is your fault. This is not who you are, this is not your identity. And you need to make it stop right now.’
The book is priced at Rs 299.
