The National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disable People (NCPEDP) recently announced the appointment of Arman Ali from Assam as its Executive Director.
Arman would assume charge from October 1. Disability rights activist Javed Abidi, who was the director of the NCPEDP, passed away on March 4 after succumbing to chest infection. He was 53. Ali’s appointment was announced during a National Disability Consultation on the Rights of Persons with Disability which saw participation of 23 states and 2 Union territories.
Ali is the Executive Director of Shishu Sarothi, the Centre for Rehabilitation and Training for Multiple Disability. Under his leadership, Shishu Sarothi grew from a small 28 member team to a 90 member team and has been dedicatedly working towards the cause of disability. Ali has played a crucial role in forming a network of organisations from the eight states, leading campaigns and engaging the judiciary to uphold the rights of persons with disabilities.
A member of the National Committee on Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the think tank instituted by NCPEDP and also a partner of the National Disability Network, Ali has played a pivotal role in NCPEDP’s campaigns, working closely with Abidi, the most recent being the struggle for a new disability law that finally saw shape as the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act.
