With the use of new software application, the Meghalaya Police is tracking offensive and inflammatory posts on social media which often leads to violence. The new software applications are being used by the Cyber Crime Wing.
Two persons namely Manbhalang Nongspung and Fuller Strong Kharsyiemlieh were also arrested for their alleged involvement in making offensive, inflammatory and derogatory remarks on social media.
Meghalaya CID Special SP, R Muthu said the Cyber Crime Wing has started taking legal action as per provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000, the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008 and the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in various cases.
So far, 11 cases have been registered for offensive, inflammatory and derogatory remarks on the social media and a number of persons have been questioned. Mobile phones of the accused were seized which has evidence of inciting materials which the accused had posted or forwarded.
The Meghalaya Police has also taken help from various Central Government agencies and departments as well as from a technological institute in Delhi to enhance the capabilities of the Cyber Crime Wing in the State.
