As per a recent index published by the Public Affairs Centre (PAC), smaller states that have a population of less than two crore, Mizoram, Sikkim and Tripura from the Northeast have emerged among the top five states with good governance. But Nagaland, Manipur and Meghalaya were ranked at the last of the index in the small states category.
Kerala, Himachal Pradesh and Mizoram topped the index on being the states to provide better living conditions for all children. The good governance index has been released annually since 2016, ranking states on social and economic development they are able to provide.
Chairman of PAC, K Kasturirangan said that the PAI 2018 is one example of a data-based arrangement that provides some elementary basis to assess the performance of states in India. It may be mentioned that PAC has done the ground research across all the Indian states, according to 10 basic survey themes including essential infrastructure, support to human development, social protection, women and children along with the law and order situation.
Interestingly, the 2018 PAC index also included a separate index on the children of India, reflecting a measure of how child-friendly these states were during the indexing period.
Meanwhile, where there are some smaller states in the Northeast that brought laurels in term of PAC indexing, states like Meghalaya, Manipur and Nagaland still have a long way to go in order to provide good governance to the individuals residing in the states.
