Demand for organic pineapples from Manipur has increased in the national capital after the first order was airlifted to the national capital on July 29. The sudden surge of the high demand for the local pineapple is because it is free of chemicals. Manipur Organic Mission Agency’s (MOMA) project director, K. Debadutta Sharma said that the uniqueness in its taste is another undeniable factor that was proved by All India Pineapple Show held at Agartala and Nagaland.
Social entrepreneur of Krushi Karma Naturals, Paowinsin Kipgen, said that the educated unemployed youth is playing a crucial role in the collection and accumulation of pineapples from local farms that are meant for export. When asked about the demand for pineapples, he said that as of now demand is higher than supply, also it was difficult to meet the demands completely due to the lack of packaging materials.
One of the pineapple cultivators from Thayong, Sana Kom, appreciated the initiative taken up by MOMA and stated they are very happy with the proper market strategy not only for earning profit but also for reaching the right flavours.
It may be mentioned that the queen variety of pineapple is mainly cultivated in Thayong, Andro, Waithou Chiru, whereas the Kew variety is cultivated in Bunglon and Khousabung.
