Along with other parts of Assam and the country, Guwahati is also getting ready to celebrate the 72nd Independence Day. The administration has organized three days celebration with student-centric events in the first two days, which will be conducted in educational institutions with ‘patriotism’ as the theme. From poster making competition focusing on Swach Bharat, quiz competition on history of Indian Independence and many more events will be conducted throughout schools in the district. Higher-education institutes, IIT, GMCH, Assam Engineering College along with other colleges and private universities have also been asked to conduct events as a part of the three day celebration. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has urged all the districts across Assam to conduct similar events under the State government’s banner.
Commenting on the security measures in Guwahati, Police Commissioner, Hiren Nath said, ‘Three-tier security arrangements have been made and no compromise will be done.’ Nath requested the people not to carry extra amenities while visiting the celebration venues except for the basics like phone and purse. He stated that maintaining discipline is of utmost importance and requested the public to do so. Deputy Commissioner of Guwahati Metro Community, Virendra Mittal said, ‘We may have a few issues weather wise as the weather forecast shows the possibility of showers. Apart from that, all other steps have been taken from parking to drinking water for the convenience of the public.’
Chief Development Officer of States Cultural Affairs Department, Saurav Pani Phukan supervising the cultural teams briefed about the preparation for the literary festivals. ‘Boro, Rabha, Dimasa, Manipuri, Mishing, Jhumur, Bihu, Nepali, Rajasthani, Bhur Taal and many more cultural performances are lined up for the Independence Day celebration. Also, senior artistes of the cultural fraternity of Assam will be performing a cultural and patriotic composition of the State led by Bhupen Ujir, Pullock Banerjee and many more,’ Phukan informed.
