Looking at rising popularity of tea in Northeast, the Meghalaya horticulture department will, for the first time, organise a tea festival to promote the State’s organic tea varieties. The festival is slotted amid a series of festivals the department organises every year in November. B. Syiem, Joint Director of Horticulture, Meghalaya announced that the Meghalaya Tea Festival will be the first of its kind in the State. As the teas produced in Meghalaya are organic certified, the department will try to promote the State’s brand of organic teas through this festival.
The festival is scheduled to be held at the State Central Library in Shillong, but the department is yet to finalize the dates. All stakeholders of the tea industry in Meghalaya, including the tea houses of the State, will take part in the festival. The department had organised a State-level jackfruit festival for the first time in the Meghalaya capital city in July.
Syiem further stated that there is also a series of festivals lined up later in the year. The Sohiong festival, where participants of the Shillong Wine Festival will also be invited to showcase their products, shall be held later this month. In October, the Horticulture Department is organizing Mushroom Festival, while in December the Orange festival will be celebrated.
The horticulture official revealed that every year, a good number of participants and a lot of visitors come to attend these festivals.
