Manipur police arrested as many as 89 students and six faculty members of Manipur University last night. The event occurred after the sudden outbreak of fresh agitation by students who resisted the newly-appointed Pro- Vice Chancellor and Registrar to assume office. Social media feed and local reports claim that tear gas shells and rubber bullets were fired at the students inside the boys hostel located inside the campus.
The agitation started after Pro Vice-Chancellor Y Yugindro Singh entered the University complex to take charge on Thursday afternoon. Singh was appointed by Vice-Chancellor AP Pandey, who has been suspended.
Police confirmed that the students and professors have been detained at different police stations namely the Imphal police station, the Singjamei police station and the Lamphel police station. They will be produced before the court of Judicial Magistrate Imphal West on Friday. According to sources, many students were injured during the raid.
According to reports, students appearing in Thursday’s examination were mentally disturbed and failed to concentrate as a result of the new development. Meanwhile students who had came to take admission forms had to return home as the counter was shut down due to the incident.
