Centre has decided to set up the National Sports Centre in Meghalaya to facilitate the hosting of National Games 2022 in the State.
Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Thawarchand Gehlot in an event said that centre has decided to accept the request of the Meghalaya Government to set up National Sports Centre at an estimated cost of over Rs 200 crore. Gehlot informed while speaking at the Samajik Adhikarita Shivir aids and assistive devices distribution camp for the differently able person under the Assistance to Disabled Person in Meghalaya which was held here today.
Gehlot informed that Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had agreed to provide 50 acres of land for the constructing the international standard sports stadium.
Meanwhile, CM Conrad Sangma said that this stadium will also be put to use during the National Games 2012. He also said that there will only be five such sport centres throughout the country adding that the State was lucky to get a stadium which is of international standard.
Earlier, the Union Minister also informed that the Ministry will set up a Composite Regional Centre (CRC) in the state.
It may be mentioned that the CRC for Persons with Disabilities is a service modality set under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, and Government of India with the aim of creating resources and infrastructure required for developing services for persons with disabilities in the State.
“We start the project once the State Government hands over the land to us. An amount of Rs 20 crore will be earmarked for the CRC project,” he said.
