Government of India’s cleanliness drive across the country through various schemes has compelled the states and its districts to remain clean. In one of such missions, the Swachh Survekshan Gramin (SSG)-2018 survey adjudged Tawang district in Arunachal Pradesh as the cleanest district in entire Northeastern region. Tawang was also given ODF status (Open Defecation Free) just an year ago in December 2017.
The survey was conducted by an independent agency engaged by the Union Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, from August 1-31 this year across the country in 698 districts. The evaluation process was based on direct observation of sanitation in public places (30%), citizen feedback (35%) and service level progress on sanitation as per Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) parameters.
Union for Drinking Water & Sanitation Uma Bharti gave away the award to the State at a function in New Delhi commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Sentum Yomcha, Mission Director, SBM (G) of PHE & WS Department, received the coveted award on behalf of the Arunachal Pradesh government.
CM Pema Khandu appreciated the Deputy Commissioner of Tawang, and the team of SBM (G) for making their district the first ODF district in September 2017 and making it to the cleanest district a year after.
The State (Arunachal Pradesh) had earlier achieved Open Defecation Free (ODF) on 31st December 2017. The SSG-2018 in the State was launched by Chief Minister Pema Khandu on 25th July 2018, followed by district level launch by the respective Deputy Commissioners under the guidance of Chief Secretary.
