Uplifting the theatre culture in Assam and Guwahati, Ruby Visions and Bob Barua Benefaction has come up with a two day theatre fest at the ITA Machkhowa in Guwahati. The two day fest shall be open for the audience on the first day and the show shall be ticketed on the second day. Addressing a press meet Pallavi Chumki Barua, organizer of the fest said that the theatre fest was the vision of (Late) Souvik Barua (Bob), which has been finally executed two years after Bob’s death.
Play for the first day ‘True and False’ was directed by Rohan Kumar Das and produced by Pallavi Barua herself. The play thrilled the audience with a live quiz show filled with suspenseful activities. Asha Kuthari Chaudhuri, HoD of the Department of English in Gauhati University said, ‘In the last couple of years, people in Guwahati have welcomed theatre. And accordingly the bar has been also raised for the theatre artists and organizers for better performance.’
Regarding the financial constraints involved in theatres Pallavi Barua said, ’It is difficult to get sponsors for theatres. Also, the increase in the culture of free shows in the state has created problems for organizing ticketed plays.’
She further ssaid, ‘All the actors performing for the upcoming two days are only part time drama artists. It is because theatre does not serve their bread and butter. Hence, always there is pressure on the organizers for the financial engagements in theatres.’
The organizers also informed that the banner, Bob Barua Benefaction focuses to uplift and help the needy related to theatres and plays. ‘All the money collected through tickets shall be given out as scholarships for students in the field or art and drama’ informed the organizers.
