Guwahati is many things; it is chaotic with pockets of calm, modern and yet vintage, loud but colourful and most of all, charismatic. If you are visiting the city for the first time, it is easy to feel a little confused. Being a melting pot of cultures, it offers too many experiences to cover during a short trip, but that doesn’t mean that it cannot be done. We help you discover some of the best that the city has to offer within 24 hours –
Start your day at Kamakhya Temple. Set an alarm and reach the temple early. If you feel the lines to go inside the main temple are still quite intimidating, then simply light a diya (small earthen lamp) at one of the designated places within the premises and ask for blessings. While descending the stairs of the temple, stop at one of the many tea-stalls and get your morning cup of tea, accompanied by a sweetmeat of your choice.
Now it is a given that a cup of tea and some sweets are not going to hold you over for too long, so you will need to get a cab from the parking lot of the temple to Uzan Bazaar. Enjoy a light breakfast at Cafe Riverrun that overlooks the Brahmaputra River. The food is delicious and affordable.
After you have had your fill, you can walk over to the Assam State Museum. It is about a 15-minute walk from the cafe, use Google Maps and you will not have any problem finding the museum. The entry fee is minimal and the exhibits will help you understand Assamese culture better. If the weather permits, you can even go boating on Digholi Pukhuri pond, which is located right in front of the museum.
Soon enough, it will be time for lunch. If you want something traditional then you should opt for the Assamese Thali at Paradise Hotel, Silpukhuri. But if you want ethnic food with a modern twist, then you should opt for Cafe Heritage Kharika, Lamb Road, which is closer to the museum.
After lunch, take a cab to Fancy Bazaar. The market has everything that you could possibly want from clothes to fruits. There are lot of street stalls as well as boutiques that you can visit. The best things to pick up as souvenirs are bamboo decor items and gamusa (cloth towel). You also need to keep in mind that bargaining is encouraged unless you have entered a store that has a no-bargain policy.
After picking up souvenirs, you may be hankering for a drink or some light dinner. You can try Terra Mayaa, Urban Mantra, Shanghai Salsa or Cafe Hendrix, for good food and lively ambience. You can end the night by listening to live music by local bands.
Of course, 24 hours is not enough to fully experience the city but you can still have a good time and take back memories that will make you want to visit again.
