Muga Silk is one of the most rarest silks in the world. The fact that it is produced nowhere in the world, except Assam is a matter of pride among the Assamese society. Not only that, it is well known that it’s one of the most expensive silk in the world. Being expensive has no bearing on its popularity as Muga remains one of the most desired silk across the globe.
However despite being in demand, production of Muga Silk has gone down. This can be attributed to the hazards in rearing of Muga polu in Som plantation. The rampant use of pesticides has also contributed to the cause.
