Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) Supremo Akhil Gogoi is going through troubled times. In the past few months, his popularity has gone down rapidly. In fact, many of his close aides like Kamal Medhi have also deserted him. Now, if all these were not enough, Gogoi was arrested by city police on Sunday from the middle of a press conference which he was addressing in his organisation’s headquarter at Gandhibasti. Grave charges of inciting mob during the recent eviction drive carried out by the government in Kaziranga have been pressed against him.
Akhil Gogoi resurfacing after 13 days
A case was registered at Jakhalabandha PS against the peasant for inciting mob. He went underground immediately after that. However, he resurfaced in his headquarters on Sunday and in fact gave police an open challenge to arrest him. However, after his arrest, he was taken to Nagaon PS for security reason.
‘After registering the case, the High Court also rejected his anticipatory bail and Akhil was absconding. As soon as he surfaced today, we arrested him,’ Guwahati Police Deputy Commissioner (Central) Ranjan Bhuyan said.
Meanwhile, Gogoi in his press conference alleged that the BJP government is conspiring against him. ‘BJP-RSS people are spreading rumours that we opposed the eviction to safeguard Bangladeshi migrants. If there were Bangladeshi immigrants, then why did the government not arrest them and deport?’ he said.
