At a time when the Central Government is planning to provide citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis by portraying them as victims of religious persecution, Durga Puja was celebrated amidst much grandeur there. As per reports published in Bangladeshi newspapers like ‘Dhaka Tribune’, number of Durga Puja has increased in their country this year.
While last year, 29, 074 Durga Pujas were celebrated in Bangladesh, this year the number is 29, 500. In the capital city Dhaka, 229 Pujas have been celebrated. Some of the notable Pujas of Dhaka are Dhakeswari Mandir, Ramna Kali Mandir, Jagannath Hall in Dhaka University, Ramkrishna Mission, Anandamoyee Ashram and Loknath Brahmacharya Ashram. Bangladeshi newspapers have published special supplement for Durga Pua. Local FM channels aired Puja songs. Even Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina forwarded donation to Pujas.
In this scenario, question is raised whether the condition of Hindus in Bangladesh is as bad as is being made out by BJP. Had it been so, it would have been difficult for them to celebrate their main festival with such fervor.
