Thwarting strict vigil by security forces, poachers struck yet again in Kaziranga National Park (KNP). This time, they killed a rhino on late Tuesday night ear Deusur of the Burhapahar range in KNP. Forest officials disclosed that they had launched a search operation against poachers after hearing gunshots in the night. However, the poachers fled soon after dehorning the rhino. The rhino succumbed to bullet injuries in the head. The forest officials recovered cartridges of M-14 and AK-47 rifles.
Beat officer arrested
Meanwhile, in a major crackdown against poachers, a team of Special Task Force (STF) arrested a Forest Beat officer for his alleged involvement in rhino killing incidents. The tainted official has been identified as Prasenjit Kiling. Two hand-made rifles have been seized from his possession. Prasenjit Kiling was serving as the Beat officer in Kuthori Beat Office. Four other poachers, namely Bogaram Kiling, Samshed Ali, Lakhan Sahu have been arrested in Rongmonway village in Karbi Anglong.
Prasenjit Kiling has confessed of being involved in killing rhinos and also selling their horn. He said that few days back, a rhino horn was sold for Rs 40 lakh in Dimapur and his share was Rs 5 lakh.
