Amid speculations from all quarters, ULFA General Secretary Anup Chetia was finally brought back to Guwahati on Wednesday.
Chetia’s wife Monika Baruah who was awaiting Chetia’s arrival for more than ten (10) years said, ‘Today, I and my son (Sagar) are more than happy, as after a long time, we have met Anup.’ She further said, ‘The law will take its course, so now I don’t want to comment anything regarding this’.
Chetia was produced in the Court of the Special Judicial Magistrate where he has remanded to five-day CBI custody in connection with a murder case at Golaghat in the year 1986. Speaking to reporters, Chetia’s counsel Bijon Mahajan said, ‘CBI lawyers had asked for 14 days custody. We presented our side.’
‘After he was handed over to India by Bangladesh, where he spent 18 years in jail, and brought to Delhi on 11th November, Chetia was arrested the very next day by the CBI which took a six-day transit remand there, the counsel further said, adding, ‘At the closure of the transit remand on Tuesday, the CBI brought Chetia to Guwahati by a special aircraft on Wednesday.’
Meanwhile, a CBI source said, ‘Chetia’s physical condition is not good, he is undergoing medical treatment, the department is taking care of his all requirements.’
