In a major breakthrough against insurgency, the Meghalaya police on Wednesday arrested Jerome Momin, the former commander- in-chief of ANVC, for allegedly selling sophisticated weapons and ammunition to GNLA.
Speaking to media, Meghalaya Police Public Relations Officer and IGP in charge of law and order, G.H.P. Raju said, ‘Jerome had sold three big weapons and ammunition to GNLA self-styled commander-in-chief (C-in-C) Sohan D. Shira at the cost of Rs 17 lakh each.’ He also said that as per reliable sources, Jerome amassed huge wealth as C-in-C of disbanded ANVC and bought considerable plots of lands in Deku area of South Garo Hills, flats in Guwahati and many other places.
He further said, ‘During the investigation, his financial transactions made the police suspect that all properties acquired by him are from ‘terror-funds.’
‘While the ANVC had formally deposited weapons in 2014, Jerome kept many illegal weapons undisclosed and hid them for future sale,’ the official added. Meanwhile, the police has also found out from the surrendered GNLA cadres that Jerome has emerged as the ‘chief mentor’ of Sohan in recent months.
