Smriti Zubin Irani, Union Minister of Textiles inaugurated an Apparel and Garment Making Centre at Lamboikhongnangkhong in Imphal West district. She also distributed ‘Pehchan’ identity cards to some artisans of Manipur.
The Apparel and Garment Making Centre, Manipur, is fully funded by the Union Ministry of Textiles and is expected to generate direct employment for 1,200 people. The Centre with three units would have 100 machines and their capacity would be augmented so as to create entrepreneurs and skilled workforce for the apparel sector. It consists of one skilling block and two commercial blocks along with 300 machines.
The ‘Pehchaan’ scheme aimed at identifying weavers launched in October 7, 2014 and has now identified more than 2000 weavers and issued identity cards.
Smriti Irani said, ‘The Prime Minister wants to give special attention to Northeastern states for development and the project for installing the Centre costs Rs 18 crore and it will be beneficial for the State.’
MUDRA scheme was also launched for the direct connectivity of the weavers so that they can be easily identified for international exhibition. She added that for textile promotion in the State, the Central Government has sanctioned Rs 200 crore.
The State awardees who are trained weavers will be given Rs 30, 000 per month, 12 clusters from three districts will be selected for design workshop training and will be given Rs 300 per day.
The inaugural function was attended by MP Dr Th Meinya Singh and State Commerce And Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam among others.
