This Durga Puja brought some good news for ASTC as its night city bus service during puja days met with resplendent success. Now buoyed by the same, the organization is now considering extending its timings in the night hours.
In order to ensure complete mobility during Durga Puja, the organization had operated 260 buses across all regular routes. Not only that, it had extended its service during night hours till the wee hours of the morning. Services were also rendered to and from Kamakhya and also to its sattelite township.
ASTC Managing Director Anand Prakash Tiwari termed the public response ‘extremely good’. Expressing satisfication the IPS officer said the focus to give quality public transport to the entire city throughout the festival days. And now after seeing the public lapping up the night city bus services, the MD mulls on increasing the timings in night hours.
‘The response was extremely good. We are contemplating on increasing the timings of the city bus service, especially in night hours. We will have to assess the scenario and come with a clear thought,’ Tiwari said.
In the past, there have been complaints from commuters owing to lack of public transport during night hours. Based on that, last October, the Kamrup Metro district administration and the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Kamrup, had introduced 20 city buses on three arterial routes between 8 pm and midnight. Till then it was only possible to avail city buses till 9 pm. It is to be noted that over 1,200 city buses, mostly private, operate in the city. Over 3 lakh people use city buses every day.
