Controversies are not alien for megastar Priyanka Chopra and the ‘Quantico’ star has found herself in the hot soup again after calling Sikkim an insurgency affected state. She also called the Sikkimese movie ‘Pahuna’ which she is producing as the first movie to come out from the region. As both these claims are not true, this has made lot of people upset in the region.
Priyanka Chopra, while speaking about ‘Pahuna’ during an interview at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) said, ‘Sikkim is a small state from Northeast India. It is an insurgency affected place. It never had a film industry. Never before anyone has made a film from Sikkim. Our film is the first movie to be made in this region. This film is based on the story of two kids who get separated from their parents while fleeing the Maoist agitation from Nepal to Sikkim. The entire cast and many of the technicians are from Sikkim. It is a take on the refugee crisis from the eye of two kids.’
While Sikkim doesn’t really have a full-fledged movie industry like Bollywood, ‘Pahuna’ certainly is not the first full length feature film to come from here. Prashant Rasaily, a very talented filmmaker have made acclaimed films like ‘Katha’ and ‘Acharya’. This year a Lepcha film ‘Dhokbu’ premiered which also earned a lot of praise. There are also movies by Ugen Chatola, many of which starred superstar Danny Denzongpa, who himself hails from Sikkim and these movies got great commercial success as well.
Chopra’s statement that Sikkim is an insurgency affected state has also made people angry. The fact that crime rate in the state is almost negligible and it is one of the most peaceful states in the country shows Brand Ambassador of Assam’s general lack of knowledge.
