In a major drawback to the political existence of the oldest political party of India – the Indian National Congress—in the Northeastern states, eight congress legislators of Nagaland have joined he Naga People’s Front (NPF)-led Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN). BJP is a partner in this alliance.
It is to be mentioned here that, recently, 10 legislators of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) including former three-time Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma deserted the Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP).
Speaking on the issue, Bijoy Gupta, General Secretary of State BJP said, ‘The Congress reign in the Northeastern states is almost coming to an end; after Assam, now a number of congress workers in Nagaland are switching sides.’
‘People of the Northeast are not at all happy with the policies and governance of the Congress; as a result of their misrule and corruption, not only workers but also legislators who are presently not in cabinets are continuously deserting the Congress,’ he further stated.
He further pointed out, ‘Not only Assam or Nagaland, we will soon win over the votes in other Northeastern states such as Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram.’ It is to be mentioned here that with the merger of the Congress with NPF in the in Nagaland Assembly, the ruling party’s effective strength in the House has risen from 38 to 46. In the Assam Assembly also, Congress seats have drastically reduced from 79 to 69.
