Whenever we pass by Cotton College, we often marvel at its old buildings, preserved intact from the British era. The old buildings have retained their charm over the years leaving us in awe.
There is no doubt about the fact that college remains the most iconic educational institution in the Northeast. Every year scores of students jostle to earn the coveted ‘Cottonian’ tag.
However the competition to become a part of this iconic college will be even MORE from now.
With several of it’s buildings already being conserved as Heritage Buildings, the iconic college is all set to become a Heritage College in itself. The Assam Branch of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) is doing the conservation works that are estimated to cost around Rs 4.35 crore. The University Grants Commission (UGC) last year extended the financial support for the purpose to develop the college into a Heritage College, together with the other 18 colleges of the country. The amount granted for Cotton College for the purpose is the highest amount granted by the UGC for this purpose.
The Chemistry Department of the 115-year old college which was built in 1901, has been undertaken for conservation along with the Junior Gallery (original laboratory) attached to it.
It needs to be mentioned that the ambitious project was initiated by some college authorities some time back. After they got UGC’s nod, the Assam branch of INTACH was brought on board to execute the same. The conservation process is already underway and the entire process involves conservation of four buildings namely- the Old Chemistry Building together with the Junior Gallery, the Senior Chemistry Gallery, the Principal’s Residence and the KK Handiqui Boys’ Hostel.
INTACH on their part has already completed conservation work of the New Arts Building. They have now started the ground work for the conservation of the Principal’s Residence of the College, which was constructed in 1883-1884. The conservation work for the KK Handiqui Boys’ Hostel Building is slated to be done within the next two to three months.
