Dipa Karmakar put up a brilliant performance in the recently concluded Rio Olympics 2016. She was the first Indian gymnast to qualify for the vault finals, whrein she finished a close fourth. Since her record breaking performance, Dipa has been the toast of the nation and has been receiving adulation from all corners. Now one big fan of hers, a former Indian football captain, Prasun Banerjee wants Dipa to be made the country’s brand ambassador.
Why Banerjee wants Dipa as Ambassador?
Banerjee’s demand stems from the fact that Dipa, being the golden girl has made the country proud, and hence should be made the brand ambassador of the country. The TMC MP didn’t elaborate much on the issue much saying he will raise the issue in the next session of the Parliament. Banerjee also felicitated the athlete at her Abhoyanagar residence.
“She is the golden girl of the country who made all Indians proud with her performance in gymnastics and she should be made the brand ambassador of our country. I would raise the issue in the next session of Parliament,” Banerjee told reporters.
Banerjee, an Arjuna awardee himself has played for the country in the 1970s and 1980s. He also captained Mohun Bagan and handed over a green and maroon jersey of the club and a wooden relic of Ashokstambha to Karmakar.
In addition to that, Vice-President of Trinamool Congress, Mukul Roy also felicitated the gymnast on behalf of the TMC and gave her a plaque, an ‘uttario’, two sarees and a gold necklace in presence of Chairman of the Tripura unit of TMC, Ratan Chakraborty and Sudip Roy Burman, former leader of the opposition and an MLA.
