After the tragic death of an elephant which fell into a pit dug by the Patanjali Park authorities, irate State Forest Minister Pramila Rani Brahma directed officials to lodge an FIR against Patanjali. It may be mentioned, a female elephant and her calf fell into a deep pit on Wednesday morning in the park premises constructed covering areas of an elephant corridor. Though the calf was rescued, the mother died unfortunately.
However, Brahma after reaching the site on Thursday expressed her anguish over the incident and promised appropriate action against the culprits. She instructed Patanjali to leave 80 acres of land from the construction site so that wild elephants could move through that passage. She also ordered the Forest Department to file an FIR against the contractor of the Park site for not taking measures like boundary walls to prevent wild elephants from falling into construction pits.
However, interestingly earlier this month, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had laid the foundation stone for setting up the park spread over 200 bighas of land in Ghoramari. So questions galore why Sonowal government allotted the land to Patanjali despite knowing that there is an elephant corridor through the site.
Sonowal, on his part supported his cabinet colleague’s decision. He said, ‘ The Forest Minister has been given complete authority to act as per her judgement on such matters. In this case, the decision of the Forest Minister will be the decision of the State Government.’
