Interrogation has been started on former Assam MLA Jatin Mali in connection with the suicide of a contractor Bishweshar Baruah. Mali had earlier surrendered himself in the court of the Kamrup district sessions judge in connection with a suicide case and was granted interim bail.
What’s the case all about
It is to be noted that the police were already hot on the heels of Mali after the contractor reportedly mentioned in his suicide note that the former MLA allegedly duped him. Baruah was found hanging in his house at Maligaon on September 4. The suicide note said Mali had taken Rs 15 lakh from him in April and promised him a sand-mining contract in South Kamrup district. He was, however, not given any work and Mali did not return the money, the note alleged.
Mali has been absconding since a suicide note purportedly written by the contractor came to light. Police had launched a manhunt for Mali and visited the politician’s residence twice here since the suicide. But police could not find Mali. However tables turned when on Wednesday, police nabbed an aide of the MLA. Mali’s surrender came hours after Guwahati police commissioner Hiren Nath’s warning that he could face arrest for investigation into the case.
Protest against Mali intensifies
Residents of Palasbari, the assembly seat Mali earlier represented, earlier took to the streets to protest against police’s failure to nab Mali. A local body, Sachetan Nagarik Mancha, also recently submitted a memorandum to South Kamrup DC demanding the MLA’s arrest within 24 hours. Meanwhile, police formed a Special Investigative Team (SIT) to ascertain the authenticity of the suicide note and its contents. Several public organizations hit the streets on Wednesday pressing for a high level probe in the case.
Mali, who had contested as an Independent in the Assembly elections, lost to BJP’s Pranab Kalita from Palashbari.
