Former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi says ‘Foreigners are foreigners. We can’t treat foreigners differently based on their religion.’ Sarbanada Sonowal, who himself was a leader of the Assam Agitation, on the one hand talks about making Assam foreigner-free, on the other hand, he is now going to roll out the red carpet for Hindu Bangladeshis,’ he pointed out.
‘We have already accepted a lot of foreigners who came to Assam during the period from 1952 to 1971,’ Gogoi said, adding that even former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee extended support to the Assam Agitation.
Tarun Gogoi said that the Citizenship Amendment Bill should be withdrawn immediately, while adding, ‘It must be ensured that the interests of the people of Assam are protected.’ He further alleged that the BJP-led government is intentionally delaying the NRC update exercise in the State. ‘The Home ministry has not released funds for carrying out the NRC update work so as to delay the exercise,’ he said.
Tarun Gogoi said ‘As the Chief Minister, Sonowal must clarify his stand on Central government’s move to grant citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis. As per the input I have received, the Joint Parliamentary Committee has postponed its scheduled visit to Assam on November 2 and 3 following a request from the Assam Government, given the by-polls in Lakhimpur and Baithalangshu.’
