In the biggest ever blow to the rebel outfit Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), East Garo Hills police commandos have shot dead Kennedy T Sangma alias Hebel—chief of the banned organization’s ‘action group’—during an encounter in the jungles of Durama Hills on Thursday.
Interacting with the media, East Garo Hills police chief, Davis Nestell R Marak, said, ‘Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT) commandos were on a search operation inside the jungles of Durama Hills when they spotted a group of GNLA militants near Khakwa Duragre village—18 km from Williamnagar town.
He further informed that as per intelligence inputs, the militants had come out of their makeshift camp and were probably headed for patrolling when they were spotted by the SWAT unit commandos. ‘The exchange of fire was intense for around 10-15 minutes during which the GNLA action chief was killed,’ SP further added.
‘This search operation has revealed that there are as many as 10-15 GNLA militants holed up in the makeshift camp which had been separated into two parts’, he further shared.
It may be noted here that two AK rifles, a powerful Russian made Draganov sniper rifle along with 24 live AK rounds, an empty AK ammo case, 2 live rounds of 7.62 calibre for the sniper rifle and four mobile handsets were recovered from the encounter site.
