‘The nation will gradually be in the grip of darkness if this party continues to remain in power,’ this has been stated noted intellectual and former Gauhati University professor Hiren Gohain. A group of 43 intellectuals led by Gohain have appealed to people to not vote for the BJP. Intellectuals have accused the BJP of drawing up a plan to exploit Assam by keeping its people engrossed in ethnic and communal tensions, ‘BJP has been trying to negate real patriotism with insane patriotism.’
‘We are not sparing the Congress also for its misrule and corruption during the last 15 years in the State,’ Gohain clarified while responding to a question if he stands in support of the Congress party. Echoing Gohain, another intellectual and former principal of B.Barooah College asserted that BJP is trying to give communal colours to the historical Saraighat war in Assam. The war was between the Ahom king and Mughals from Delhi. It was not between Hindus and Muslims of Assam. The BJP leaders however think so and have termed this election as the last battle of Sariaghat.
The group comprises of other noted personalities such as poets Nilamoni Phukan and Nalinidhar Bhattacharyya, authors Nirupama Bargohain and Anima Guha, cultural activist Loknath Goswami, among others. Shivanath Barman, editor of a newspaper owned by a prominent Congress leader, also signed the appeal.
