In a significant development, the State government on Friday assured that all the landless families of Assam will receive land pattas by 28th February 2015. The decision was taken at a meeting between the State government and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) in the presence of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
While interacting with ENe, KMSS general secretary Kamal Medhi said, ‘After the discussion, we are quite hopeful that the State government will keep their promises. We are expecting a positive response from the government.’ He further said that even if it is a poll strategy, they want to work within the stipulated time, or they will again agitate.
‘As per the law, land pattas would be issued to nearly 64,000 landless families besides small tea growers on the basis of eligibility,’ said an insider from the meeting, adding, ‘The entire process of allotting land pattas is likely to be completed before 28th February.’
‘Besides, eviction on forest lands has been stopped temporarily,’ he further asserted, adding, ‘KMSS during the meeting also advocated for introducing new land laws in the State.’ It is to be mentioned here that the meeting was attended by Revenue & Disaster Management minister Bhumidhar Barman and Agriculture minister Rockybul Hussain.
