Congress and BJP are in for some competition in the Manipur Assembly polls next year. The formation of two new parties- Manipur National Democratic Front (MNDF) and Meeyamgi Thougalloi Manipur (MTM) have made the ensuing poll battle interesting.
Formation of new parties in Manipur
Notably, former minster and Congress strongman Bijoy Koijam is the senior vice-president of MNDF, while Colonel (Retd) Chugkham Joyraj, who quit BJP a couple of days ago, was appointed convener of the ad hoc committee of MTM.
Senior politician Ch Priyokumar has been appointed president of MNDF, a party formed with the aim of strengthening the democratic and pluralistic character of the state.
‘Our party will settle all issues within itself, unlike national parties that require an approval from the ‘high command’ to take action,’ said MNDF vice-president-cum-spokesperson Lein Gangte.
Gangte, former secretary general of the State unit of JD(U), said his party would field 30 candidates in the valley and 10 in the hills in the coming polls. He added that the party would support the popular Inner Line Permit movement.
On the other hand, Joyraj said the national parties had failed to satisfy the aspirations of the people of the state.
