Despite hailing from the 4th backward State of India, most politicians and members of political parties of Assam have managed to increase their assets. As a result with every passing year, the numbers of ‘Crorepati’ candidates in the State are increasing at an alarming rate. According to the self-sworn affidavit filed by the candidates this time, out of 539 candidates, 112 are crorepatis.
Following are some of the richest candidates who are contesting in Assam Legislative Assembly Elections 2016.
Jyoti Subba—With Rs.1,41,41,30,990.00 moveable and Rs.1,46,70,53,372.00 immovable assets, Jyoti Subba—the wife of former MP Moni Kumar Subba—an independent candidate from Sootea constituency in Tezpur district is the richest candidate.
Naren Sonowal– Subba is followed by AGP candidate from Naharkatia constituency of Dibrugarh district, Naren Sonowal. Sonowal has assets amounting to Rs 33, 94, 60,623.00 crore.
Rahul Roy– Congress candidate from Algapur in Hailakandi district, Rahul Roy has replaced his mother Mandira Roy this time. He has a total of Rs 25 crore assets to his name. Roy, the son of veteran Congress leader and Hailakandi MLA Gautam Roy, is the third richest candidate.
Jayanta Khaund- AGP candidate from Naovaicha in North Lakhimpur district, Jayanta Khaund has assets of Rs 21 crore. Khaund has managed to secure the 4th position.
SanjayRaj Subba- Veteran congress leader Sanjay Raj Subba has a total of Rs 13 crore. He is contesting from Naovaicha constituency.
BharatChandra Narah– Senior leader and advisor to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Bharat Narah has total assets of Rs 10 crore. Narah is contesting from Dhaukukhana constituency of North Lakhimpur district.
Bithika Dev- Wife of former MP Santosh Mohan Dev, Bithika Dev, the Congress candidate from Silchar constituency has a total of Rs 9 crore assets to her name.
