It appears that smugglers want to exploit the flooded river Simsang and Chillai before the water level goes down. These rivers have been main routes for smuggling wooden logs, coal and bamboo from India to Bangladesh. Despite the best efforts of BSF, the smuggling bid continue unabated through these major rivers in Meghalaya.
Huge seizure by BSF in Meghalaya
Within last two days the BSF has seized huge quantity of 142.84 Cft of wooden log, 500 nos of bamboo and 10 tonnes of coal while being smuggled through Simsang river in area of Baghmara, South Garo Hills district of Meghalaya.
Coal and wooden logs are concealed with bamboo rafts. The timber is marked and tied up with sacks of coal. The heavily flooded river through pose severe threat to the BSF troops still they jump into the river to foil such illegal acts and catch these heavy rafts.
The BSF troops seized 4889.124 Cft of wooden logs worth Rs. 1,36,56,440 till Aug 31 during this year in Meghalaya.
